When the Clouds Gather: Remembering My Father

And once again, I start on a similar note. It’s been a while since I published my last blog bla..bla…bla

Nevertheless, it’s evening of 19th August. It’s been raining cats and dogs (at times I so wish that idiom happens in actual) owing to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and strengthened monsoon winds. My heart goes out for all those are impacted in Mumbai and other impacted regions of the country. Someone else is impacted too, not so much by the intense rains but this date, 19th August, the black day of my life. Five years from today, my dad breathed his last breath.

This day is also a moment of reflection, remembering my father and the lessons he taught me.

Oh boy, I miss him. I miss him dearly and more than often cite to mom what he would have said or done for my certain actions. Folks who know me, know it well that when I feel choked, the only way I am able to express myself is through proses and at times through a poem. This one goes for my dad, papa

Dad’s 5th Death Anniversary | Reflecting on Life: Remembering My Father

/

Thoughts Beyond the Poem

My father, Late Dilip Kumar Das, spent his entire life at Garden Reach Ship Builders & Engineers (GRSE) under the Ministry of Defence, retiring in 2016 as an Office Superintendent. That can be considered his golden era.

Coming from a village named Kumardubi in Baharagora subdivision of Purbi Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, he was a man deeply connected to mitti (soil). If you love my passion for gardening, let me tell you, it isn’t even a fraction of what he used to do.

After moving from his village to Ranchi for higher studies and to find a respectable job, he eventually started a merchandise business. That was his true calling, but in those days, following one’s passion was often seen as irresponsible. Like many responsible citizens of his time, he handed over the shop to his younger brother and chose a more stable professional path. I believe that was his missed chance, yet he never let that shadow touch me or Di. We weren’t rich, but he ensured all our essential needs, with essential being the key word, were always fulfilled.

I owe my consulting instincts, my never-say-never attitude, and my habit of spreading smiles to him. He could light up any room with his banter and jokes. I never realised until much later that I wear this skill like a badge of honour.

I am not an idle son. I have had my chances and missed them too. All I want to say is this: value relationships while they’re still here. The truth, however painful, is they will not be here forever.

From My Heart to Yours

I have never been a parent to a human child yet, but I have lived my share of parenthood through my rabbits and cats. Still, I can vouch for the fact that every parent sacrifices more than their children can ever imagine, often without them ever knowing. So love them wholeheartedly when they grow old. Remember, they are re-entering their childhood, and the least we can do is not burden them with our frustrations or emotional baggage.

If you too carry stories of unfulfilled responsibilities, I will be waiting to hear them in the comments.
